Prices vary a lot by area, material and season. Use quotes from local contractors and suppliers for an accurate estimate.

What goes into the cost of a fence

  • Materials: posts, rails, pickets or panels, concrete and fasteners, usually priced per linear foot.
  • Labor: digging, setting posts and building the fence, also usually per linear foot.
  • Gates: priced per gate, including hinges and latches.
  • Removal: taking down and hauling away an old fence.
  • Permits and fees: one-off costs that don’t depend on length.

The calculator doesn’t fill in prices, because they vary a lot by material and region. To price materials yourself, make a list with the fence calculator and check prices at your local store.

Worked example

A 150 ft fence with one gate, using example prices of $18 per foot for materials, $12 per foot for labor, $350 for the gate and $150 in fees:

ItemCost
Materials$2,700
Labor$1,800
Gate$350
Fees$150
Total$5,000, or about $33 per foot

These prices are only for illustration. Your local prices will be different.

What makes a fence cost more or less

  • Material: chain link is usually the cheapest to install. Wood is in the middle. Vinyl and aluminum usually cost more up front but need less upkeep.
  • Height: taller fences use longer posts, more rails and more pickets.
  • The ground: slopes, rock and roots slow down digging.
  • Gates: each gate adds posts, hardware and labor.
  • Removal: an old fence adds labor and disposal costs.

Getting accurate quotes

  1. Ask two or three local fence companies for written quotes.
  2. Check that each quote covers the same things: removal, gates, post depth and concrete.
  3. Compare the price per linear foot, which the calculator shows for your own figures.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fence cost per foot?

It depends on the material, height and your area. Enter the per-foot prices from your quotes above to see your total.

How much does a 150 ft fence cost?

Multiply 150 by the installed price per foot, then add gates, removal and fees. The calculator does the sum for you.

What is the cheapest type of fence?

Chain link is usually the least expensive to buy and install. Wood picket fences are often next.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Many towns require one, especially for taller fences or fences near the street. Check with your local building department and HOA.

Can I share the cost with my neighbor?

Many neighbors split the cost of a shared boundary fence. Agree on it in writing before work starts.
