Plan a gravel or stone project in a couple of minutes. Each calculator below turns the size of your area into cubic yards, tons and bags, using typical weights for that material.
Gravel and stone calculators
- Gravel calculator: the all-rounder for paths, patios and beds, with six gravel types to choose from.
- Gravel driveway calculator: works out the base, middle and top layers of a driveway separately.
- Pea gravel calculator: sets a sensible depth for paths, patios, beds and dog runs.
- River rock calculator: picks the depth from the size of rock you want.
- Crushed stone calculator: #57, #3, #411, crusher run and stone dust, with extra added for compaction.
- Rock & stone calculator: lava rock, beach pebbles, marble chips and other decorative rock.
Which calculator should I use?
| Your project | Calculator | Typical depth |
|---|---|---|
| Garden path or walkway | Pea gravel or gravel | 2–3 in |
| Patio or seating area | Pea gravel | 3–4 in |
| Landscape bed instead of mulch | River rock, or rock & stone | 2–3 in |
| Dry creek bed | River rock | Depends on rock size |
| Shed base or paver base | Crushed stone | 4–6 in |
| Gravel driveway | Gravel driveway | 8–12 in, in layers |
| Drainage trench | Crushed stone (#57) | Fill the trench |
Before you order
- Ask your supplier whether they sell by the ton or by the cubic yard. Most gravel weighs 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, while lava rock is far lighter.
- Bagged gravel usually comes in 0.5 cubic foot bags, and 54 of them make one cubic yard. For more than about a cubic yard, bulk delivery is usually the cheaper option.
- Order 5 to 15 percent extra for settling and compaction. Each calculator adds this buffer for you, and you can change it.
- See How We Calculate for the formulas and material weights behind every result.
